Bodycam footage from Kazakh rescuers has revealed the harrowing scenes following the crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines plane near Aktau, Kazakhstan, on Wednesday, in which 38 people lost their lives. The Embraer 190 jet, which was en route from Baku, Azerbaijan, to Grozny, Russia, crashed after being diverted due to fog. The plane, carrying 62 passengers and five crew members, was forced to make an emergency landing. Authorities were able to rescue 29 survivors from the wreckage. Flight tracking data showed the aircraft straying from its original route, crossing the Caspian Sea before ultimately circling the area where it crashed near Aktau.
In addition to the bodycam footage, videos from passengers aboard the flight surfaced on social media. One such video showed terrifying moments inside the aircraft before and after the crash, capturing the chaos that unfolded. Another video showed a man praying in the moments leading up to the crash, with the sounds of panic and the plane’s engine roaring in the background.
The aircraft, originally intended to fly northwest from Baku to Grozny, veered off course, crossing the Caspian Sea and ultimately crashing near Aktau. A bodycam video from one of the rescuers, shared by Russian media outlet RT, depicted firefighters rushing to the site of the accident to extinguish the fire caused by the crash. Another video circulating on social media shows a man praying just before the crash, with the sounds of panic and the deafening roar of the plane’s engine heard in the background.
