A police case has been filed against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi following a complaint by the BJP, accusing him of being responsible for the injuries sustained by two of its MPs, Pratap Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput, during parallel protests by Treasury and Opposition benches outside Parliament. Both MPs, one of whom is 69 years old, suffered head injuries and are currently hospitalized.
Rahul Gandhi has been charged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita, including voluntarily causing grievous hurt, endangering the life or personal safety of others, criminal intimidation, use of criminal force, and common intention.
The complaint was lodged on Thursday by former Union Minister and BJP MP Anurag Thakur, along with MPs Bansuri Swaraj and Hemang Joshi, who also accused Gandhi of attempting to murder. “We have filed a complaint against Rahul Gandhi for assault and provocation. The incident took place outside the Makar Dwar of Parliament House, where NDA MPs were protesting peacefully, and Rahul Gandhi pushed them, injuring two BJP MPs who are now hospitalized,” Thakur told reporters.
Pratap Sarangi claimed that he was injured after Rahul Gandhi pushed Mukesh Rajput. According to Sarangi, both MPs were standing on the stairs when Rajput fell on him. “Rahul Gandhi pushed an MP, and when he fell on me, I also fell down. I was standing near the stairs when this happened,” Sarangi explained.
BJP leaders have accused Gandhi of hooliganism, but the Leader of the Opposition has denied these charges. Gandhi dismissed the allegations, suggesting they were an attempt to distract from Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s comments on BR Ambedkar. The Congress party has also filed a complaint, with party chief Mallikarjun Kharge claiming that he was pushed by BJP MPs, resulting in injuries to his legs.
Meanwhile, BJP Rajya Sabha MP from Nagaland, Phangnon Konyak, alleged that Rahul Gandhi “shouted” at her during the protest, calling his behavior “unbecoming” of the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. Konyak said, “It was a peaceful protest, and I did not know it was him, but he came in front of me and started shouting at me, which I did not like.” She added, “There was no space to move, and nobody was blocking anyone. He accused me of blocking him, which I really did not like,” and emphasized that she had filed a complaint with the Rajya Sabha chairman about the incident.
