Ratan Tata’s Rs 10,000-Crore Legacy: Beloved Dog Tito Guaranteed Lifelong Care

Five years ago, Indian industrialist Ratan Tata welcomed his German Shepherd, Tito, into his life, following the loss of his previous dog of the same name. Now, Tito has been assured a lifetime of care by Tata’s trusted cook, Rajan Shaw. Ratan Tata even established specific provisions in his will to ensure Tito’s “unlimited” care, as reported by The Times of India. Tata’s longtime butler, Subbiah, who has been with him for over three decades, is also a beneficiary of Tata’s thoughtful planning.

In his will, Ratan Tata, who has an estimated legacy of over Rs 10,000 crore, made significant provisions for family members and his loyal staff. The inheritance has been shared among his brother, Jimmy Tata, and his half-sisters, Shireen and Deanna Jejeebhoy, along with dedicated household staff. Notable assets in Tata’s estate include his 2,000-square-foot Alibaug beach bungalow, a residence on Juhu Tara Road in Mumbai, over Rs 350 crore in fixed deposits, and a 0.83% stake in Tata Sons.

The Tata Sons shares—a key part of the Rs 7,900-crore legacy—will go to the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation (RTEF), reinforcing Tata’s lifelong commitment to charity. Tata’s stake in the Tata Sons conglomerate, valued at roughly Rs 16.71 lakh crore across group entities, will be used to further philanthropic efforts, with Tata Sons chief N Chandrasekaran likely to chair RTEF.

Tata’s longstanding dedication to service is also reflected in his decision to keep many details of his will private, in line with his commitment to humility. The legacy includes his Colaba home, Halekai House, owned by Ewart Investments, a Tata Sons subsidiary, where Ratan Tata lived in his final years. The future of Halekai House, as well as Tata’s impressive collection of 20–30 classic cars currently held at Halekai Niwas and the Taj Wellington Mews in Colaba, remains under discussion. The vehicles may be displayed in a museum in Pune, or put up for acquisition or auction by the Tata Group.

Ratan Tata’s will also includes his stake in Goodfellows, a collaborative venture with Shantanu Naidu, and Tata forgave Naidu’s personal loan for his foreign education. Embracing Tata Group’s legacy of community service, Tata’s estate embodies his values, inspiring future generations through his life’s work, philanthropy, and the generosity extended to those closest to him.
