The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is nearing the completion of a “watertight charge sheet” against Sanjay Roy, the main accused in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. DNA and forensic reports have confirmed Roy’s involvement, ruling out the possibility of gangrape, with no evidence indicating the involvement of any other individual.
Roy, 33, a former civic volunteer with access to the state-run hospital, was arrested by Kolkata Police on August 10, a day after the 31-year-old doctor’s body was found in a seminar hall on the hospital’s fourth floor. His DNA matched samples collected from the victim’s body, a key piece of evidence solidifying the case. Additional forensic tests also supported the findings against Roy, officials said.
The CBI, which took over the investigation, does not require further custody of the accused and plans to produce Roy in court on Friday, where he is likely to be sent back to judicial custody. On August 23, he was initially remanded to 14 days’ judicial custody. CCTV footage captured Roy entering the hospital alone at 4:03 AM on August 9, the day of the incident.
Roy has maintained his innocence, claiming that the victim was already deceased when he entered the seminar hall. However, the forensic evidence strongly contradicts this claim.
The brutal crime has sparked outrage across the nation, drawing attention to the functioning of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident has led to the removal of the hospital’s controversial principal, ignited political tensions between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and prompted suspicions of a larger conspiracy. The victim’s family continues to allege gangrape, despite the evidence pointing to a lone perpetrator.
