‘I Express Regret’: After SC Rebuke Over Comments On Kavitha’s Bail, Revanth Reddy Says He Respects Judiciary

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has apologized following a stern rebuke from the Supreme Court regarding his comments on BRS leader K Kavitha’s recent bail. In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Reddy conveyed his “unconditional regret” and clarified that his remarks had been misinterpreted.

The Supreme Court had sharply criticized Reddy’s comments, which implied a possible deal between the BJP and BRS to facilitate Kavitha’s bail. The Court expressed concern that such statements could erode public trust in the judicial system. Justice B R Gavai, leading a three-judge bench, questioned the appropriateness of the Chief Minister’s remarks and emphasized that they could wrongly influence public perception of the judiciary.

Reddy had previously suggested that Kavitha’s bail, granted after just five months, was suspicious compared to the longer detention periods of other political figures like Manish Sisodia and Arvind Kejriwal. He further alleged that there might have been a political deal between the BRS and BJP that influenced the bail decision.

In his apology, Reddy reaffirmed his respect for the judiciary and its independence, stating that his comments were intended to reflect concerns about perceived inconsistencies in the judicial process, rather than undermine judicial authority.

The Supreme Court, while addressing the issue, reiterated its commitment to impartiality and stressed that its decisions are made based on legal considerations, free from political pressures or criticisms. The Court called for mutual respect between political leaders and judicial institutions to preserve the integrity of the legal system.

The controversy surrounding Kavitha’s bail is part of ongoing scrutiny over the Delhi excise policy case, with the CBI and Enforcement Directorate facing criticism for their investigation methods.
