The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 was particularly memorable for Royal Challengers Bangalore as a team. The Indian Premier League is a title that the RCB has yet to claim as a team. But under Smriti Mandhana’s direction, the women’s team created history by winning the Women’s Premier League in 2024. The men’s team will definitely feel more confident after the victory. Virat Kohli celebrated with a video call after RCB beat Delhi Capitals in the championship game.
RCB skipper Smriti Mandhana feels it’s not right for people to undermine Virat Kohli’s achievements for the Bengaluru franchise in the wake of her side’s Women’s Premier League title triumph recently. “The title is one thing, but what he (Kohli) has achieved for India is remarkable. So, I don’t think that comparison is right in terms of where my career is and what he has already achieved,” Mandhana told the media on Tuesday.
The Mandhana-led RCB defeated Delhi Capitals to lift the WPL trophy in only their second year, while their male counterparts, led by the charismatic Kohli for nearly a decade before he stepped down, haven’t had success in the 16 years of IPL.
Meanwhile, the Indian cricket team star batter Virat Kohli received a rousing ovation from the fans during the RCB Unbox event at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Tuesday. Kohli has been a part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise since the first IPL season back in 2008 and over the years, the fans honoured him with the nickname ‘King Kohli’. However, during the event, Kohli asked the host Danish Sait and the fans to not call him ‘king’ as he feels embarrassed every time he hears it and even revealed a conversation with Faf du Plessis about the topic.
“Firstly, you need to stop calling me that word (King). Please call me Virat. Don’t call me that word (king), I was just telling Faf du Plessis that I feel embarrassed every year when you call me that word. So just call me Virat, please, from now on, don’t use that word, it’s very embarrassing for me,” Kohli had said.
