In Lahore, Pakistan, a woman faced a harrowing ordeal after being mistaken for disrespecting the Quran due to her attire adorned with Arabic prints. The incident unfolded when she found herself surrounded by a hostile mob in a local restaurant, captured in a viral video that circulated widely on social media.
The video depicted the woman in distress, shielding her face from the jeering crowd as misconceptions about the Arabic prints on her attire led to accusations of Quranic blasphemy. The situation escalated quickly, subjecting her to public scrutiny and ridicule.
Amidst the chaos, a female police officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi, intervened bravely, urging the crowd to refrain from violence and facilitating the woman’s safe departure from the premises. The Punjab Police commended ASP Naqvi for her courageous actions, recommending her for the prestigious Quaid-e-Azam Police Medal (QPM), the highest gallantry award for law enforcement in Pakistan.
ASP Naqvi later shed light on the misunderstanding, explaining that the woman had simply worn a kurta with Arabic writings during a shopping trip with her husband. The confusion arose when some individuals misinterpreted the prints as Quranic verses, leading to the alarming situation.
Subsequently, the woman issued an apology, expressing regret for any offense caused unintentionally. She clarified that she had purchased the kurta for its design and had no intention of disrespecting the Quran.
A user on social media platform ‘X’ later clarified the misunderstanding, revealing that the Arabic writings on the woman’s attire were simple words unrelated to religion, such as “حلوة” meaning “beautiful.”
