Supreme Court Declines Plea for FIR Against Justice Yashwant Varma in Cash-At-Home Controversy

The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain a petition seeking the registration of an FIR against Delhi High Court Judge Yashwant Varma in connection with the recovery of cash from his residence.

A bench comprising Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan stated that an in-house inquiry was already underway and that the Chief Justice of India (CJI) would have multiple options available once the probe was concluded.

The petition, filed by advocate Mathews J Nedumpara and three others, sought immediate action against Justice Varma. However, the bench remarked, “Once the in-house inquiry is complete, all necessary steps can be taken. If required, the CJI has the authority to direct the registration of an FIR. Why should we intervene at this stage?”

Earlier this week, the Supreme Court appointed a three-member committee to investigate the alleged discovery of cash at Justice Varma’s official residence in Delhi.

The controversy arose following a fire at his residence on March 14, during which firefighters and police reportedly found large sums of cash. The revelation sparked serious allegations, but Justice Varma has strongly denied the claims, asserting that the money does not belong to him.

In a response submitted to Delhi High Court Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya, Justice Varma alleged that the accusations were part of a conspiracy aimed at framing and defaming him.
