Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have reached a divorce settlement, according to a statement from Jolie’s lawyer on Monday, bringing an end to one of Hollywood’s longest and most contentious divorce battles.
Jolie’s attorney, James Simon, confirmed to The Associated Press that the couple had come to an agreement. People magazine was the first to report the news.
“More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt,” Simon said in a statement. “She and the children left all of the properties they shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family. This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved that this part is over.”
No court documents have been filed yet, and a judge still needs to approve the settlement. An email to Pitt’s attorney seeking comment was not immediately returned.
Jolie, 49, and Pitt, 61, were one of Hollywood’s most high-profile couples for over a decade. They share six children together.
Jolie filed for divorce in 2016 following an alleged incident during a private jet flight from Europe, where she accused Pitt of being abusive toward her and their children. In 2019, a judge declared them legally divorced and single, though the division of assets and child custody remained unresolved.
A private judge was initially appointed to handle the case and reached a decision granting equal custody of their children. However, Jolie filed to have him removed due to an undisclosed conflict of interest, and an appeals court agreed, forcing the couple to restart the process.
Details of the settlement have not been made public, though some information has surfaced through a separate lawsuit filed by Pitt, in which he claims Jolie backed out of an agreement to sell him her share of a French winery they once owned together. It remains unclear how the divorce settlement will impact that lawsuit.
