Three coaches of the Secunderabad-Shalimar Express derailed near Nalpur Station, located in Howrah district of West Bengal, on Satruday morning, causing significant disruption to train services. The incident, which occurred on the main Howrah-Kolkata rail route, left several passengers stranded and raised concerns about the safety of the rail network.
According to railway authorities, the train was traveling from Secunderabad in Telangana to Shalimar in West Bengal when the derailment took place. The affected coaches, identified as part of the train’s general compartment, were severely damaged but reports suggest there were no immediate fatalities.
The derailment triggered a massive rescue and relief operation, with railway staff, local police, and medical teams dispatched to the scene. Emergency services were swiftly set up to clear the small wreckage and to restore normalcy to the railway line. As a result of the incident, several other trains on the route were delayed or diverted, affecting thousands of commuters.
Initial investigations indicate that the cause of the derailment could be linked to either track maintenance issues or a fault in the train’s mechanical system, though officials have not yet confirmed the exact cause. A detailed inquiry has been ordered by the Indian Railways to determine the factors leading to the derailment.
This incident has sparked renewed concerns over the condition of the country’s railway infrastructure and the need for better safety measures.
