The social platform X has suspended a newly created account associated with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The account, which appeared over the weekend and posted messages in Hebrew, was removed early Monday with a notification stating: “X suspends accounts which violate the X Rules.” Elon Musk’s platform did not specify the nature of the alleged violations nor did it respond to an inquiry from The Associated Press.
The suspension follows recent escalated tensions in the region. Israel’s weekend strikes on Iranian targets were the first openly acknowledged offensive actions, escalating conflict between the two nations. Khamenei, in a speech on Sunday, characterized Israel’s strikes as significant but advised against either exaggerating or downplaying them. He refrained from calling for retaliation, instead addressing what he described as a “miscalculation” on Israel’s part in its assessment of Iran’s capabilities and the Iranian people’s resolve.
The now-suspended X account had posted its first message in Hebrew, using the phrase: “In the name of God, the most merciful,” a common Islamic greeting. A subsequent message mirrored statements from Khamenei’s Sunday speech and was similarly shared in English. The post said: “Zionists are making a miscalculation with respect to Iran. They don’t know Iran. They still haven’t been able to correctly understand the power, initiative, and determination of the Iranian people.”
This is not Khamenei’s first encounter with social media restrictions. In February, Meta removed his Facebook and Instagram accounts following his statements in support of Hamas, a group designated as a terrorist organization by multiple countries, after its attack on Israel in October 2023.
Iran has long restricted domestic access to platforms such as X and Facebook, making it necessary for citizens to use virtual private networks (VPNs) to access these platforms.
