The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has taken over the security of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, following an order from the Supreme Court. This decision comes in the wake of the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at the hospital earlier this month, an incident that has sparked nationwide outrage and protests.
On Wednesday, around 150 CISF personnel were deployed at the medical facility, with the force expected to secure the resident doctors’ hostel and other key areas of the hospital. A CISF team, led by a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) rank officer, conducted a survey of the hospital to assess the security requirements.
The Supreme Court’s order to deploy the CISF at the hospital is part of a broader initiative to ensure the safety of medical professionals across the country. The apex court has also constituted a 10-member task force to formulate a national protocol aimed at enhancing the safety and facilities for doctors. The task force has been directed to submit an interim report within three weeks, with a final report due in two months.
This move follows the arrest of the prime suspect, civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy, in connection with the August 9 incident. The case, which is now being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), was transferred from Kolkata Police following an order by the Calcutta High Court on August 13.
The tragic death of the trainee doctor has led to widespread condemnation, with protests erupting across the country demanding swift justice and better protection for healthcare professionals. The incident took a further disturbing turn on August 14 when miscreants vandalized parts of the hospital premises, adding to the sense of insecurity among the medical community.
