Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem made history at the Paris Olympics 2024 by breaking the Olympic record in the Men’s Javelin throw with a massive 92.97m in the final on Friday. Nadeem, who had previously made headlines as the first Pakistani athlete to qualify for an Olympic final in athletics at the 2020 Tokyo Games where he finished fifth, solidified his place in history with this remarkable achievement.
The day didn’t start smoothly for Nadeem, as his first attempt resulted in a foul throw due to a misstep during the run-up. However, he quickly regrouped and delivered an astonishing throw on his second attempt, shattering the Olympic record and stunning the crowd. Despite the early setback, Nadeem’s determination and skill were evident as he found his rhythm and secured his place at the top of the standings.
Indian athlete Neeraj Chopra, the gold medalist from the Tokyo Games, also faced a challenging start with a foul on his first attempt. However, he recovered well, registering a legal throw of 89.45m on his second attempt, which placed him in second position in the standings.
The competition featured 12 athletes who had qualified for the final by either surpassing the automatic qualification mark of 84m or by finishing among the top 12 in the 34-man qualification pool. Each athlete was given three throws in the final round. After these initial attempts, the athletes were ranked based on their best throws. The four athletes with the lowest rankings were then eliminated, while the remaining competitors were granted another three throws each to determine the final standings.
