Former Union Minister Birender Singh Quits BJP, To Join Congress

Former Union minister Birender Singh announced on Monday that he was leaving the Bharaitya Janata Party BJP and joining the Congress again.

The change was made almost a month after his son Brijendra Singh left the saffron party and the Lok Sabha to join the traditional party.

“I have submitted my resignation to J P Nadda, the head of the party, and I have resigned from my primary membership in the BJP. Prem Lata, my spouse, who served as an MLA from 2014 to 2019, has also left the party. We’re going to join the Congress tomorrow,” he said at a press conference.

After cutting his connections from the Congress, Birender Singh joined the BJP in 2014 in the presence of Amit Shah, the party president at the time.

His son Brijendra quit as an MP on March 10 of this year, citing “compelling political reasons,” and joined the Congress. After Singh issued the party with an ultimatum during a rally in Jind in October 2023, Brijendra left the BJP almost five months later.

In Haryana, Singh had threatened to quit the BJP if it persisted in its alliance with Dushyant Chautala’s Jannayak Janata Party (JJP), the deputy chief minister’s party. Singh’s son joined the Congress just two days prior to the saffron party’s March 12 breakup with the JJP.
