Senior judge Justice Surya Kant could become the 53rd Chief Justice of India. Current Chief Justice Bhushan R. Gavai recommended his name to the central government on Monday, beginning the process for appointing the Chief Justice. Traditionally, the current CJI recommends his successor only when asked to do so by the Law Ministry.
