Kirron Kher Dropped by BJP, Sanjay Tandon To Contest Chandigarh LS Seat

The BJP has chosen Sanjay Tandon as its candidate for the single Lok Sabha seat of Chandigarh, replacing Kirron Kher, who served as MP for two terms. Tandon, aged 60, is currently the party’s co-incharge for Himachal Pradesh and is the son of former Chhattisgarh Governor Balramji Das Tandon, a key figure in the Jana Sangh and later the BJP’s Punjab chapter.

Expressing gratitude for the nomination, Tandon emphasized the importance of political chemistry over mathematical calculations in elections. Kirron Kher, the outgoing MP, extended her congratulations to Tandon on social media.

Having previously served as the BJP chief in Chandigarh for nearly a decade, Tandon pledged his commitment to the welfare of the Union Territory, affirming his deep connection with its people over four decades.

The BJP’s announcement of Tandon’s candidacy came alongside its list of candidates for nine Lok Sabha seats, including Chandigarh and Bengal, reflecting the party’s strategic choices for the upcoming elections.

Addressing concerns about the INDIA bloc’s challenge, Tandon emphasized the unpredictable nature of politics, citing the importance of chemistry over rigid mathematical calculations. Notably, other potential candidates for the Chandigarh seat included Satyapal Jain and Arun Sood.

Tandon highlighted his roots in Punjab and his extensive involvement in party activities in the region, emphasizing his familiarity with Punjab’s culture and ethos. He recalled his father’s teachings on the importance of dedicated service in politics without seeking personal gain.

Professionally, Tandon is a chartered accountant and serves as the president of the UT Cricket Association Chandigarh. His social contributions extend through various NGOs, including the Competent Foundation and Balramji Das Tandon Charitable Foundation.
