India’s 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa will demand a team capable of handling pace, bounce and seam movement. My predicted 16-member squad combines experienced batters, versatile all-rounders and a varied bowling attack. Three decisions define my strategy: Shubman Gill as captain, Axar Patel at No. 5 and Hardik Pandya as the X-factor.

- Bhuvneshwar Kumar
- Kuldeep Yadav

Why Axar Patel at No. 5?
My most important selection decision is Axar Patel at No. 5. South African conditions can produce early wickets, and India need a batter who can stabilise the innings while maintaining scoring momentum.
Axar demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure in the 2024 T20 World Cup final against South Africa. He scored 47 off 31 balls and shared a crucial 72-run partnership with Virat Kohli after India lost three early wickets. His innings helped India recover and post a competitive total.
That performance strengthens my case for promoting Axar in 2027. His left-handed batting also creates a valuable left-right combination in a predominantly right-handed top order.
I would use Axar to rebuild the innings rather than rely on him primarily for explosive death-over hitting. Hardik Pandya would take on the main power-hitting responsibility in the final overs, while Ravindra Jadeja would be my alternative if Axar struggles for form.
Hardik Pandya: India’s X-Factor
Hardik would be my X-factor because of his ability to change a match with both bat and ball. With Axar providing stability at No. 5, Hardik could focus on accelerating the scoring rate and delivering powerful finishes under pressure.
His seam bowling would also provide flexibility. If Hardik is unavailable through injury, Nitish Kumar Reddy would be my replacement option, although he may not offer the same finishing power.
A Bowling Attack for South Africa
Jasprit Bumrah would lead the pace attack with his accuracy and wicket-taking ability. Bhuvneshwar Kumar would offer the potential to exploit swing, while Arshdeep Singh would provide a left-arm angle.
Mohammed Siraj would be the first fast-bowling backup. Kuldeep Yadav would be my specialist spinner, offering an attacking wrist-spin option in the middle overs.
If Kuldeep struggles over three or four matches and conditions strongly favour seam bowling, I would consider Nitish Kumar Reddy at No. 8 to strengthen the batting depth and add another seam-bowling option.
My Backup Plans
- Yashasvi Jaiswal for Rohit Sharma: An aggressive opening alternative if Rohit has a poor tournament.
- Rishabh Pant for KL Rahul: A potential attacking change if Rahul struggles.
- Ravindra Jadeja for Axar Patel: An experienced alternative offering left-handed batting, spin and excellent fielding.
- Nitish Kumar Reddy for Hardik Pandya: A seam-bowling all-rounder option if Hardik is unavailable.
- Mohammed Siraj for Arshdeep Singh or Bhuvneshwar Kumar: A pace-bowling alternative depending on form and conditions.
Final Verdict
My predicted Indian team is built around a clear strategy: Gill leads, Axar stabilises the middle order, and Hardik provides the X-factor.
Axar’s performance in the 2024 T20 World Cup final gives a compelling reason to consider him for a more prominent batting role. Combined with India’s experienced top order, Bumrah’s pace and Kuldeep’s wrist-spin, this XI offers a tactical foundation for South African conditions.
Ultimately, player form, fitness and conditions at individual venues will determine the best combination. My approach is to prioritise balance, assign clear roles and retain alternatives for the challenges of a long tournament.
This is a personal prediction, not an officially confirmed Indian squad or Playing XI.
