Portion of Delhi’s Gokulpuri Metro Station Collapses, Claiming a Life

In a devastating incident on Thursday, a 53-year-old man lost his life when a section of the Gokulpuri metro station, situated on the Pink Line operated by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), collapsed. The victim, identified as Vinod Kumar, a resident of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Colony in the nearby Karawal Nagar area, was on his scooter when debris from the wall fell upon him.

The incident, reported at 11:10 am, prompted a swift response from the fire department, dispatching four fire tenders to the scene. Tragically, despite the efforts of the Delhi Fire Services personnel who rescued Kumar from beneath the rubble and rushed him to a nearby hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.

The catastrophe also left four others injured, who were promptly transferred to GTB Hospital in Dilshad Garden for medical attention. Additionally, two motorcycles and two scooters were damaged in the collapse.

According to authorities, a section of the boundary wall of the elevated platform and part of a slab crashed onto the road below around 11:04 am, with some debris still perilously hanging. DCP Joy Tirkey of Northeast Delhi disclosed that a significant span of approximately 40-50 meters of the wall, along with the slab, had collapsed, while further investigation and debris removal efforts were underway with the aid of JCBs and cranes.

Given the gravity of the situation, the metro station has been temporarily shut down, pending an inspection by a team of experts to assess the structural integrity and determine the necessary repairs. DCP Tirkey commended the swift response of local police personnel and firefighters, along with the assistance provided by residents in rescuing the injured from the rubble and facilitating their transfer to the hospital.
