Mumbai Police Rejects Kunal Kamra’s Plea for More Time, Issues Second Summons

Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra’s request for an extension to appear before the authorities has been denied by Mumbai Police. Kamra’s lawyer had sought a week’s time from the Khar police station, but the plea was rejected. Consequently, officials have issued a second summons for him to appear.

Kamra has been facing criticism, particularly from the Shiv Sena, over his remarks against Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. During a recent performance, he parodied the Bollywood song Bholi Si Surat, satirically referring to Shinde as a “traitor” in light of his 2022 rebellion against the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. The lyrics of Kamra’s rendition went, “Meri nazar se tum dekho to gaddar nazar wo aaye. Haaye!”

The clip quickly gained traction on social media, prompting a strong reaction from Shiv Sena. Party workers vandalized the venue where the show was recorded, leading to the arrest of 12 members, who were later released on bail. Additionally, a police complaint was filed against Kamra, intensifying the backlash.

Despite mounting pressure, Kamra has maintained that he will not apologize for his remarks. He reportedly informed the police that he stands by his words and would only offer an apology if directed by the courts. However, he assured that he would comply with legal proceedings.
