The central government is now going to slow down the pace of converting state highways into National Highways (NH). According to media reports, now not every road will get NH status, but state governments will be given money to improve their own highways. Under the new model, state governments will maintain these roads after the upgrade. The central government will now focus on building greenfield highways and expressways.
