8th Pay Commission Approved By Cabinet For Central Govt Employees

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the establishment of the 8th Pay Commission to revise the salaries of central government employees and the allowances for pensioners. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the decision on Thursday, stating that the chairman and two members of the commission would be appointed soon.

The commission will engage in consultations with central and state governments, as well as other stakeholders, to ensure comprehensive recommendations. Pay commissions are constituted by the central government approximately every decade to review and update the salary structure of its employees. Each commission operates under a specific term of reference (ToR), which outlines its focus areas, including salary revisions and pension payments.

Currently, there are over 49 lakh central government employees and nearly 65 lakh pensioners. The 7th Pay Commission, which was established in 2016, is set to complete its term in 2026.
