Punjab AAP MLA Gurpreet Gogi Bassi, 58, from Ludhiana West, was found dead at his residence late Friday night with gunshot wounds to the head. The police have launched an investigation into the incident. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Teja stated, “The investigation is underway, and the exact cause of death will be determined after the post-mortem report is received.”

According to DCP Teja, Gogi’s family claimed he accidentally shot himself, sustaining fatal injuries. He was rushed to DMC Hospital around midnight but was declared dead on arrival. His body has been placed in the hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.

District AAP President Sharanpal Singh Makkar and Commissioner of Police Kuldeep Singh Chahal confirmed Gogi’s death. Gogi had joined AAP in 2022 and secured a victory in the Ludhiana Assembly elections, defeating former Congress MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu. His wife, Sukhchain Kaur Gogi, had contested the Municipal Corporation elections but lost to Congress candidate Inderjit Singh Indi.

In August 2024, Gogi made headlines when he destroyed the foundation stone of a delayed pipeline project in Buddha Nullah, expressing frustration over the lack of progress. Following his concerns, the Speaker assured action on the matter.

Investigations into the MLA’s death are ongoing, with authorities awaiting the post-mortem findings to confirm the cause.
