Jagmeet Singh Urges Trudeau Government to Fight Trump’s Proposed Tariffs on Canadian Goods

New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh has called on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government to take a strong stance against U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s announcement of sweeping tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods. Singh’s statement followed Trump’s declaration of a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, along with a 10% tariff on Chinese goods.

Taking to social media platform X, Singh urged the Liberal government to act decisively, writing, “Stand up and fight like hell. Canadian jobs are on the line.”

The proposed tariffs are part of Trump’s broader economic plan, which he announced in a series of posts on his Truth Social account. The President-elect stated that the tariffs are intended to address illegal immigration and the drug trade, which he attributed to cross-border issues with Canada and Mexico.

“On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25 percent tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders,” Trump wrote.

In a separate post, Trump announced additional tariffs on Chinese imports, citing the country’s failure to curb fentanyl smuggling as a primary reason. “I will be slapping China with a 10 percent tariff, above any additional Tariffs, on all of its products entering the US,” he declared.

The proposed tariffs have drawn widespread concern, with experts warning of potential damage to trade relations between the U.S. and its neighbors. Canada, which shares a deeply integrated trade relationship with the U.S., could face significant economic repercussions if the measures are implemented.

Singh’s appeal underscores growing pressure on the Trudeau government to address the issue and protect Canadian industries. However, Trudeau’s office has yet to issue a formal response to Trump’s announcement.

The tariffs mark the latest chapter in Trump’s longstanding focus on reshaping trade policies, a cornerstone of his economic agenda during his previous term and throughout his campaign. Observers anticipate that the Trudeau administration will seek diplomatic channels to address the looming trade challenges.
