Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty is set to be honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his remarkable contributions to Indian cinema. The announcement was made by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to share the news. Vaishnaw, the Minister for Railways, Information and Broadcasting, and Electronics and IT, praised Chakraborty for his inspiring cinematic journey that has left an indelible mark on the film industry.

“Mithun Da’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! Honoured to announce that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to award legendary actor, Sh. Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema,” Vaishnaw wrote.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award, considered the highest honour in Indian cinema, will be presented to the legendary actor during the 70th National Film Awards ceremony, which is scheduled to take place on October 8, 2024.

This recognition comes just months after Chakraborty was conferred with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award. He received the honour from President Droupadi Murmu in April 2024. Expressing his gratitude for the Padma Bhushan award, Mithun said, “I have never asked for anything for myself from anyone in my life. When I received a call from the Home Ministry informing me that I was being awarded the Padma Bhushan, I was silent for a minute because I had not expected it.”

Mithun Chakraborty made his acting debut in 1977 with the critically acclaimed film Mrigayaa, for which he won a National Award. His breakthrough came in 1982 with the release of Disco Dancer, which became a massive success not only in India but across Asia, the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Over his illustrious career, Chakraborty has starred in numerous iconic films including Agneepath, Mujhe Insaaf Chahiye, Hum Se Hai Zamana, Pasand Apni Apni, Ghar Ek Mandir, and Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki. More recently, he was seen in OMG: Oh My God.

With a career spanning over four decades, Mithun Chakraborty remains an influential figure in Indian cinema, inspiring generations of actors and filmmakers. His recognition with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award is a testament to his enduring legacy in the industry.
