In a shocking incident, Balasubramanian, a senior leader of the Naam Tamilar Party (NTK), was brutally hacked to death on Tuesday morning while he was out for a walk in the BB Kulam area of Madurai. The tragic event follows closely on the heels of another political assassination, that of Tamil Nadu Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) President Armstrong, who was murdered just ten days prior in Chennai.
The Madurai City Police Commissioner confirmed the incident, stating that Balasubramanian, who served as the North District Deputy Secretary for NTK, was attacked during his morning walk. Despite initial suspicions of political motives, the police have classified the murder as a revenge attack, dismissing political connections.
This latest killing has intensified concerns about the law and order situation in Tamil Nadu. The party’s chief coordinator, Seeman, condemned the murder and called for the immediate arrest of those responsible. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he tagged Chief Minister MK Stalin and warned of potential protests if justice is not swiftly served. “I was shocked to hear the news that brother Balasubramanian, who was the deputy secretary of Madurai North district Naam Tamilar Katchi, was hacked to death. I strongly condemn the perpetrators of this heartless atrocity,” Seeman expressed, extending condolences to Balasubramanian’s family and friends.
The incident comes on the heels of another gruesome murder, where BSP President Armstrong was attacked by six unidentified assailants near his home in Perambur, Chennai. Armstrong, a former councillor of Chennai Corporation, sustained fatal injuries during the assault.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticized the state government, questioning the efficacy of the law and order situation. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla took to X to highlight the string of political killings, lamenting the lack of response from national leaders like Rahul Gandhi. “One more political killing in Tamil Nadu: Naam Tamilar Party’s Madurai North District Deputy Secretary Balasubramanian was hacked to death this morning. Law & Order – RIP. Rahul Gandhi hasn’t found time to visit 65 Dalits killed in Kallakurichi, Armstrong, a Dalit leader of BSP, who was hacked to death, PMK leader who was attacked, now Balasubramanian killed… Will Rahul meet their kin?” Poonawalla wrote.
The dual murders of Balasubramanian and Armstrong have cast a shadow over the political climate in Tamil Nadu, prompting calls for urgent action to restore safety and security for political figures in the state.
