Trinamool MP Saket Gokhale Ordered To Pay Rs 50 Lakh In Damages In Defamation Case

The Delhi High Court on Monday ordered Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale to publish an apology and pay Rs 50 lakh in damages to former Indian Assistant Secretary-General to the United Nations, Lakshmi Puri, in response to her defamation suit against him.

In tweets posted on June 13 and 26, 2021, Gokhale referred to property purchased by Lakshmi Puri in Switzerland and mentioned her husband, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. Lakshmi Puri accused Gokhale of making false allegations, prompting her to file a defamation suit.

The High Court noted that Gokhale’s tweets had significantly harmed the reputation that Lakshmi Puri had built in society.

“Though Puri may not currently hold any public office, individuals of her stature and achievement are respected as public intellectuals who have served the nation and are considered role models. The defamatory tweets have undoubtedly damaged that esteemed position,” the court stated.

The court emphasized that such allegations can severely damage a person’s reputation, especially if they are closely associated with someone in high public office. “In this case, the false contents of the tweets would likely have influenced opinions within the official circles where the plaintiff and her husband are active,” the court noted.

The High Court also criticized Gokhale’s conduct following the tweets. Despite being cautioned about their falsity, Gokhale showed a lack of responsibility and remorse. “Gokhale’s persistence and indifference in the proceedings are evident,” the court observed.

While acknowledging that the damage to Puri’s reputation could not be completely undone, the court stressed that Gokhale’s least obligation was to offer an unreserved and unconditional apology.
