The “War Zone” Message From Activist Sonam Wangchuk A Day Before His March Into Ladakh

A day before Sonam Wangchuk, a climate activist and education reformer, is scheduled to lead a border march to “highlight the ground realities in Ladakh,” prohibitive orders, including internet curbs, have been implemented in Ladakh.

Mr. Wangchuk, who is fasting in Leh, has asked people in Ladakh to raise their voices on Sunday from wherever they are rather than participating in the March.

Thousands were anticipated to participate in Sunday’s “Pashmina March,” which is a component of the statehood movement, to the Line of Actual Control. The man on whom the film “Three Idiots,” was based which starred Aamir Khan, Mr. Wangchuk, also stated that the march will bring attention to the “ground realities in Ladakh.” He asserted that China has appropriated more than 4,000 square kilometers of territory.

Speaking to X, Mr. Wangchuk claimed that despite the fact that the protest has been nonviolent thus far, security forces with smoke grenades, riot gear, and barricades have been stationed in the area.

“Leh is being turned into a war zone with disproportionate force, barricades, smoke grenades. Attempts to arrest peaceful youth leaders even singers continue. Seems they want to turn a most peaceful movement violent & then brand Ladakhis as anti-nationals,” he said in a post.

Mr. Wangchuk called for the march on March 27, one day after ending his 21-day fast in support of Ladakh’s statehood and the protection of the rights of the region’s majority tribal population under the Constitution’s Sixth Schedule. The march is modeled after Mahatma Gandhi’s Dandi March.

Two distinct instructions were issued by the government on Friday. “There is every apprehension about misuse of mobile data and public WiFi facilities by anti-social elements and miscreants to incite and provoke general public through various means of social media,” according to an order issued by the Additional Director General of Police, Ladakh, citing input from the police and intelligence agencies.

The District Magistrate of Leh issued another notice, this time enforcing prohibitory orders in accordance with Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).

The order places limitations on a number of activities, including public meetings, loudspeakers put on vehicles without license, and parades, marches, and rallies.

Sonam Wangchuk further asserted that demonstrators are being coerced by the police into signing bonds in exchange for their refusal to take part in the march.
