Shoot-At-Sight Orders in Uttarakhand After Madrasa Demolition Violence

In Haldwani, Uttarakhand, an unruly mob attacked more than fifty policemen when the police had gone to demolish a madrasa that the authorities had declared illegal. Security has been bolstered and orders to shoot at sight have been issued in the area.
In addition to the police, a group of civil servants and administrators had visited the madrasa, which has a mosque next door. According to sources, a group of “unruly elements” attacked the officials by hurling stones at them from a distance as soon as the JCB machine began operating. Along with police officers, other injured parties included administration officials and journalists. The violence escalated as the police responded with tear gas.

According to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, “anti-social elements there entered into a brawl with the police” as the team was carrying out an illegal structure’s demolition per a court order. “More police and central force companies are being dispatched there. We have urged everyone to keep the peace,”ANI quoted him as stating.

The namaz site and madrassa, according to Municipal Commissioner Pankaj Upadhyay, were entirely illegal. The illegal madrassa and namaz place had previously been sealed off and three acres of nearby land had been seized by the Municipal Corporation. Today, these buildings were destroyed.
