Rainfall Expected in Delhi and NCR Over The Weekend

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely across Delhi and the NCR this weekend, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Parts of the city received showers on Friday, that providing much-needed relief from the heat wave to the residents.

The IMD has also indicated that a thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty winds may affect the city. The wind speed could go up to 30 to 40 kmph at isolated locations in Delhi and neighboring states. Residents will have to be cautious about the thunderstorm.

The IMD forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas across Delhi on June 29 and June 30. Heavy rain is classified as rainfall between 64.5 mm and 124.4 mm in a day, while very heavy rain is defined as rainfall between 124.5 mm and 244.4 mm in a day.

On Wednesday, other weather experts had predicted that the monsoon would reach Delhi on Saturday and Sunday. The IMD has warned of flooding of roads, inundation, waterlogging, and also possibility of underpasses submerged in water due to the expected very heavy rainfall on June 29 and 30.

Typically, the monsoon reaches Delhi between June 27 and 29. Last year, it arrived on June 26, and the first monsoon showers of 2022 were recorded on June 30, according to official data. Heavy monsoon rains are expected this year as well.
