Election Commission Takes Strong Stand Against Use of Children in Campaigns; Issues Strict Directives

In a move to uphold ethical election practices, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued stern directives prohibiting political parties and candidates from involving children in any form of election campaigning. The commission has expressed ‘zero tolerance’ towards the use of children during the electoral process, emphasizing the need for a respectful discourse.

The recent statement by the ECI underscores its commitment to maintaining a higher standard of campaign discourse, following earlier directives aimed at promoting respectful interactions with Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).

According to the commission, political leaders and candidates are now strictly prohibited from using children in various campaign activities, including distributing posters/pamphlets, participating in slogan shouting, campaign rallies, and election meetings. The ban extends to holding a child in their arms, carrying a child in a vehicle, or involving them in any rally.

The directive places the onus on District Election Officers and Returning Officers, holding them personally responsible for ensuring compliance with relevant acts and laws pertaining to child labor. Any violation under their jurisdiction is warned to result in severe disciplinary action.

The commission clarified that the presence of a child, accompanied by their parent or guardian, in the proximity of a political leader and not involved in any campaign activity will not be considered a violation of the guidelines.

As the country gears up for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls scheduled around March-April, the Election Commission’s strong stance against the use of children in campaigns reflects its commitment to fostering an environment of fair and ethical electoral practices. Political parties and candidates are expected to adhere to these directives to avoid facing severe disciplinary consequences.
