Former Punjab Police DSP Raka Ghira was found guilty on Monday by a CBI court. On Wednesday, the sentence amount will be announced.
She was detained by the Central Bureau of Investigation at her Chandigarh home while she was purportedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from realtor KK Malhotra. Ghira was working as a DSP in Mohali at the time of her arrest.
In a complaint submitted to the CBI, Malhotra claimed that the Punjab Police had opened five cases against him as a result of the complaints of Mullanpur land owners from whom he had bought the land.
He claimed that when the DSP’s reader met him, DSP Raka Ghira demanded Rs 2 lakh in exchange for dropping the cases against him and not registering any more cases.
The realtor claimed that that on July 22, 2011, the DSP called him and reiterated the demand of Rs 2 lakh, following which he approached the CBI. Acting on his complaint, a CBI team laid a trap and arrested the DSP.
During the raids, the CBI had also seized a large quantity of arms and ammunition, including a .32-bore German revolver and a double-barrel gun, along with multiple cartridges. She was later acquitted in the arms seizure case.
Raka Ghira owned a palatial bungalow, lakhs in cash and jewellery, two luxury cars and a well-stocked bar with the best of international liquor brands. CBI sleuths had stumbled upon her empire during raids in 2011.
The CBI had filed the charge sheet against the accused in 2012.
