A court in Pakistan witnessed an emotional scene on Monday as Bushra Bibi, the wife of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, broke down in tears, expressing her frustration with the country’s justice system. Bushra was at the Islamabad District Magistrate’s court seeking bail for her husband in six cases, and for herself in another case, which had been filed at various police stations including Tarnol, Karachi Company, Ramna, Secretariat, and Kohsar. The hearing took place at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, but Imran Khan was not produced in court, nor was he allowed to appear via video link.
As Bushra addressed the court, her voice cracked with emotion. She criticized the judicial system, saying, “I have been facing injustice for the past nine months… I and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder have been unjustly sentenced.” She lamented the lack of justice, stating that she had not come to seek justice because “there is no justice” in the system. Bushra also expressed her frustration with lawyers, accusing them of wasting time and failing to deliver meaningful results.
In a poignant moment, she questioned, “Isn’t the person inside [the prison] a human? Doesn’t any judge see this?” She further declared that she would not return to this court, where she felt justice was absent.
Bushra also mentioned that she had a blanket and her belongings waiting in her car outside the court, ready to return to jail if necessary. Bushra was released from jail last month after securing bail in a separate Toshakhana case, but her husband remains incarcerated. Both were sentenced to 14 years in prison earlier this year for unlawfully retaining and selling state gifts while Imran Khan was in power. The couple denies all charges.
