Mother-In-Law Of Kolkata Rape-Murder Accused Sanjay Roy says, “Hang Him…”

In the wake of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, ongoing investigations and protests have intensified. Durga Devi, the mother-in-law of the accused, Sanjay Roy, has suggested that Roy might not have acted alone in the crime. Speaking to ANI on Monday, she recounted her strained relationship with Roy, revealing that he had previously been violent toward her daughter, leading to a police complaint.

Durga Devi described the initial period of her daughter’s marriage to Roy as positive, but things deteriorated significantly when her daughter became pregnant. She claimed that Roy caused a miscarriage and physically abused her daughter, prompting the police complaint. She also stated that she had covered her daughter’s medical expenses due to her continued illness.

“Sanjay was not a good person. Hang him or do whatever you want with him,” Durga Devi said. “He could not have done it alone. He can’t do it alone.”

The case has ignited widespread outrage and protests across India, with demands for justice for the victim. The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the case, and a bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud is scheduled to hear it today.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been authorized to conduct a polygraph test on Roy, as part of its ongoing investigation. On August 18, the CBI conducted a 3D laser mapping of the emergency ward at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, where the victim was found.

In response to the case, the West Bengal government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate allegations of financial irregularities at RG Kar Hospital from January 2021 to the present. The SIT, led by IG Pranav Kumar and supported by Murshidabad Range DIG Waquar Reza, DIG in West Bengal CID Soma Das Mitra, and Kolkata (Central) DC Indira Mukherjee, has been granted the authority to access relevant documents and is expected to submit its first report within a month.

The postgraduate trainee doctor was discovered dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, sparking a national outcry for justice and effective measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
