MS Dhoni Clarifies Leadership Role at CSK, Says Ruturaj Gaikwad Making ’99 Per Cent’ of Decisions

MS Dhoni has addressed speculation regarding his role in Chennai Super Kings’ decision-making since stepping down as captain, affirming that Ruturaj Gaikwad is firmly in charge. The legendary cricketer emphasized that while he may offer occasional advice, Gaikwad is the one making nearly all the calls on the field.

Speaking in an interview with JioHotstar, Dhoni revealed that before the start of IPL 2024, he had a clear conversation with Gaikwad. “I told him, ‘If I give you advice, you don’t have to follow it. My priority will be to stay in the background,’” Dhoni said.

Addressing rumors that he was still influencing CSK’s strategies, Dhoni explained that his role as a wicketkeeper sometimes made him appear central to decision-making. However, he insisted that Gaikwad was the one leading the team. “People assumed I was making all the decisions, but they were his. I only advised him to have a strong understanding of fielding angles. If he wanted a deep point, I would help set it based on the batsman, wicket, and bowler. That’s why you often see me making hand gestures,” he clarified.

Last season, CSK narrowly missed out on the playoffs, finishing just behind Royal Challengers Bengaluru due to a lower net run rate. Despite this, Dhoni praised Gaikwad’s leadership, saying he had done an excellent job in managing the team.

“As a wicketkeeper, I naturally act as a focal point when the captain is positioned in the outfield. That might be why people thought I was still in charge. But in reality, Ruturaj was making 99 per cent of the key decisions, including field placements and bowling changes. I was just assisting when needed,” Dhoni added.

Explaining why CSK chose Gaikwad as their captain, Dhoni noted that teams often prefer batters for long-term leadership roles, as bowlers are more prone to injuries. “When looking at the bigger picture, you usually rely on batters who have been consistent for the team. Ruturaj has been with us for a while, performed well, and has a calm and composed temperament,” he said.

He also highlighted Gaikwad’s strong rapport with CSK head coach Stephen Fleming as a key factor in the decision. “Ultimately, only he can prove himself as a leader. We gave him the opportunity because we believed in his ability, and so far, he has done a great job,” Dhoni concluded.
