A chilling incident has sent shockwaves through Manipur as Indian Army soldier Serto Thangthang Kom was abducted from his family home in Imphal and found dead with a gunshot wound. The incident took place on Saturday, leaving a grieving family in anguish, demanding justice and answers.
Serto Thangthang Kom, a dedicated soldier at 41 years old, served in the Defence Service Corps (DSC), part of the 302 Company of the Army Service Corps (ASC) stationed in Leimakhong, Manipur. Tragically, his peaceful leave was violently interrupted when he was forcibly taken from his family’s residence in Tarung, nestled in Imphal West’s Happy Valley, around 10 am on that fateful Saturday.
The grim discovery of Kom’s lifeless body, bearing a single gunshot wound to the head, was made approximately 14 kilometers away from his family home in Khuningthek village, located within the Imphal East district. The news sent shockwaves through the local community and authorities alike.
In the wake of the abduction and subsequent murder, there was an agonizing lack of information regarding Sepoy Kom’s whereabouts until early Sunday morning. His family was finally informed of the harrowing discovery when his brother and brother-in-law identified his lifeless body.
The incident has left Kom’s family devastated, particularly his 10-year-old son, Son Larengchung Kom, who witnessed the horrifying abduction. According to Son Larengchung Kom, three assailants invaded their home, pounding on the gate while the family was inside. Serto Thangthang Kom had stepped out to investigate the disturbance, and his son followed. Tragically, he watched as his father was forcibly taken at gunpoint and driven away in a white vehicle.
Leiwansomiwan Kom, the wife of the deceased soldier, expressed her anguish and determination to seek justice, saying, “My husband served in the Indian Army. On Saturday, at around 10 am, unknown assailants kidnapped him from our residence. And on September 17th, at around 8 am, we received the devastating news of his death. I don’t know who did this. I demand justice, and we will not accept his body until we know who is responsible.”
Serto Thangthang Kom leaves behind a grieving family, including his wife, daughter, and son. The investigation into this tragic incident is ongoing, and the family’s demand for justice underscores the gravity of the situation.
So far no individual or group has claimed responsibility for the killing.
